David Choe @ Fifty24SF Recap Part 1 |
This will be a monster post and divided into two parts. Enjoy. God, and/or whatever random higher power up there, knows I did. David Choe’s show at Fifty24SF was frickin amazing. We were lucky that the line wasn’t ultra long. I rolled there with Jamie♥, Tony, Amy, Nate, Greg and Natsumi and we were all very surprised by the short wait.

Even though the line/wait wasn’t too long, we grabbed a bunch of tall boys to pass the time. Saw David Choe come out while we were in line and after fighting with myself over “Should I go talk to him or should I stay in line and check the show?” I went with the latter. It was a hard choice…

So close, yet so far. The anticipation was killing me. To the far left in the bottom picture is Nate Van Dyke. That dude is a frickin giant! Hehe.

Finally in!!! I loved the watercolor pieces he did. What medium can this guys NOT master?! Geez, what a killer. It was really hard to get straight on shots because it was so crowded. Maybe I’ll go back and take pics of my favorites.

Frickin beautiful, dude…

Told you it was crowded…

Here’s the piece he did where all the proceeds went to a Haiti relief fund. If I don’t say much from this point on, it’s because I don’t need to speak for the paintings. They speak a shitload for themselves and I’ll sound like a fool for talking about them.

The walls were covered saloon style from top to bottom with so much great imagery. Jon would’ve hated it, hahaha. Here are some of his great prints.

This “Jimi” piece is so killer. You gotta see it in real life. The amount of detail is mind blowing. And his line and flow…ARGHE. The movement in this piece is just chaotic. Frickin love it. One of my faves at the show.

The awesome work just does not stop… Not only is David Choe prolific but he still manages to do quality over quanitity type work. Each style is just so inspiring and good. He could do whatever he wants and just destroy.

I really like this piece, “Hell Houndz.” The closest thing I got, and can afford, is the tee. Ha.

SO inspiring. Ah, I hope to be somewhat close to his artistic/visionary level one day.

This piece, entitled “Ignored Prayers,” was awesome. Aside from the great tecnique, imagery and detail, it was pretty damn big. It stood at about 5 feet tall, hung alone on the back wall and was just filled with awesome. So much layering and so many great little things to be found.

Some more great watercolor work.

I love what he does with spray as well. He just went down the gritty path with the can while most folks needed the ultra clean line work. This piece alone shows that he’s capable of both. What a fucker, hahaha.

Crowd shot.

Here’s Jamie♥ with Lynzy. Lynzy is an awesome person and she just happens to be the Gallery Director for Fifty24SF as well. Way to pull in another great show! Success!

This dude was lucky(?) enough to get his shirt signed by David Choe. Shoot, this might be one of the only chances I get to meet David Choe, so I set out to find him, talk to him and possibly get my shirt signed. Let the fan-boyism commence!

To be continued…
